Going Plaid!!! New Tesla Roadster...

Going Plaid!!!

New Tesla Roadster

0-60MPH in 1.9 Seconds!!!!!

Just yesterday I wrote a story about how much the founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf admired American inventor, Thomas Edison. This is ironic, as Elon Musk is not only the Thomas Edison of our time, but also the Henry Ford, and Nikola Tesla—all bundled into one person.

Tonight, in Southern California, Elon Musk just unveiled the new Tesla Trucks, and surprised everybody by unveiling the upcoming next-generation Tesla Roadster which can do 0-60MPH (97KPH) in 1.9 seconds, making it the faster production car ever made!!!

Tesla semi-truck next to next-generation Tesla Roadster. Photo appears courtesy of TechCrunch.

And even crazier, it has a 620 Mile range, achieved by a 200 Kilowatt hour batter, which means it will be able to drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles and back on one charge!!!

A post shared by Tesla (@teslamotors) on

On a side note, the fact the upcoming next-generation Roadster has a 200 Killowat hour battery, that can travel 620 miles before it needs to be recharged, is probably a sign of things to come for the Tesla Model S and Model X, which currently max out at 100 Killowat hours. Basically, this could very well be the death knell for internal combustion engines, assuming a Model S or X Tesla could travel over 600 miles on one charge!

You can watch a replay of Elon Musk's AMAZING Keynote he gave tonight by watching the video below:

I almost forgot!?!! The star of the Tesla Keynote this evening in California was supposed to be the new line of Tesla Semi Trucks, as seen below. These vehicles represent a complete game-changing disruptive technology.

Basically, in about 10 years there will be no more diesel trucks on the road. Instead, we will see these Tesla Semi Truck driving up and down the highways of the world with complete autonomy. In other words, they drive around and pick up and drop off cargo without even having a human on board. This will make highway driving much safer while significantly reducing freight cost, not to mention it will be much more environmentally friendly as these Tesla trucks will be powered exclusively by solar power generated from sunlight.

Going Plaid!!!

During Elon Musk's keynote, which can be seen in the video above, he mentions how the only speed beyond Ludicrous is Going Plaid, which you get to witness yourself in the video below.
Going Plaid is a reference to the movie Spaceballs, which was a Mel Brooks parody of the original Star Wars Trilogy. Going Plaid is a play on Hyperspace.

Elon Musk Interview @ Code Conference 2016

Elon Musk Interview @ Code Conference 2016

Elon Musk in obviously on of the smartest and most interesting people who has ever lived, so I highly recommend watching this amazing interview from the recent Code Conference 2016.

Things got really bizarre in the interview when somebody in the audience asked Elon if we are all living in an AI simulation, to which Elon basically said yes. In my mind this is a bizarre question, which a super-bizarre and profound answer I was not expecting. TechCrunch wrote a fascinating article about Elon Musk's notion, which I recommend reading. Digital Trends also wrote a fascinating piece that suggests Elon Musk believes we are living in The Matrix.

Updated Tesla Model S Arrives

Today, Tesla formally launched their updated Model S, which features:

-A new front bumper [Clark Gable Pencil-Thin/Batman Insignia Mustache]
-Updated LED 14 Point Headlights which look like the new Model X headlights. These new LED headlights can basically follow the steering of the car, and light-up around corners, as apposed to the outgoing headlights which were stationary.
-A seriously upgraded "BioDefense" air filtration filter.
-An updated the charging system for the SuperChargers from 40 to 48 amps, (and are now offering an optional 72amp charing option for even faster charging.)
-The entire rocker panel under the four side doors, and on the back and front of the Model S on the outgoing model was always black, now it is painted the same color as the rest of the car, which gives it a much more finished and polished look. This also give the car more presence.

One of the obvious questions is wether or not there are any other upgrades from the Model X. For instance, will it have air-cooled seats, or adjustable height seatbelt pre-tensioners.

Tesla iTunes Playlist Solution & Free Download

October 2016 Update: Tesla updated their operating system to 8.0 in late September, 2016, and in doing so delivered a complete overhaul of their USB Music system. There are many, many improvements and refinements they added, but this still have NOT addressed the lack of a Playlist solution.

To add insult to injury, the 8.0 solution knocked-out my free solution, as seen below. In other words, it no longer works. The reason it no longer works is prior to 8.0 Tesla used the Filename to determine alphabetical name order, which was retarded. They fixed this and now use the file metadata for the actual song name.

That being said, I am working on a new solution, which I think will work well.

On a positive note, here is a list of thing Tesla improved:

1. Album Artwork is now shown from the actual MP3 files!!!!
2. The UI on the dashboard now shows: Song Name, Album Name, Artist Name, as well as the name of the USB drive!!!!

In the future I will likely write a review of the new USB music UI.

----------------------------------

Until today there has been no user-friendly way to export an iTunes playlist so it can play in a Tesla Model S or Model X using the USB option. Today, that changes, and best of all, it's completely FREE!!!

Tesla iTunes Playlist Solution

The Tesla Model S and Model X are, in my opinion as close to perfection as you can get in a car today. When I first bought my P85D, I was in absolute awe, and I TRIED, on a regular basis to play music from my iPhone, which turned out to be an extremely unpleasant pain-in-the-ass. Why? It was horrible because Tesla does NOT have the ability to remember where via Bluetooth were you were in a playlist, so I would have to constantly navigate back to where I was in a playlist. Also, having a great music collection on my 128GB iPhone took up way too much room, and I was constantly running out of memory from shooting photos and video on my iPhone.

I am a music fanatic of the highest order, in the sense I listen to music a lot. Over the last decade I have created hundreds of playlist in iTunes, which I have invested thousands of hours building. I simply wanted to transfer them to my Tesla. Sounds simple enough, doesn't it?

I realized the Tesla Model S had the ability to play music from a USB drive, so I tried it out and it was an even worse nightmare.  Basically, there is no way to move playlists from iTunes onto a USB drive where they can be played in the Tesla. I look at this oversight by Tesla engineers as a HUGE BLUNDER!!!!?!

I searched the internet for a meaningful solution and came up empty-handed, so I put together an Automator Script for Mac that works PERFECTLY for achieving the goal of successfully transferring playlists from iTunes to the Tesla. This solution is not perfectly elegant, but it definitely does a superb job.

The screen shots below shows how the solution works. This first screen shot shows a Beach Boys playlist I want to transfer to the Tesla, and make certain I maintain the play order. If I drag and drop the files onto a USB drive, without using the Automator script, the Tesla will automatically play them in alphabetical order, this destroying my playlist playback order presence.
Basically the Automator Script allows you to select the songs in a playlist you want to export (as seen above), and create a folder with all the selected songs in the exact same order as on the playlist. The only caveat is each song will have a 4-digit numerical prefix added to the beginning of the song file name that represent the play order of that song as it appeared in iTunes. In other words, as you see in the example below, Surfer Girl by the Beach Boys is in song position 1, then Catch a wave is in position 2, etc. This is achieved because the Apple Automator script amends the file name with the numerical prefix, establishing the play order which originally came from iTunes (as seen above), and is not ready for Tesla.

Note: the Automator script can be used not only for transferring playlists, but also for transferring albums, as well as making a playlist on the fly.

Instructions:

1. Click here to Download Free Apple Automator Script for Mac in Zip File Format named, "Tesla-iTunes- Playlist.Zip" The Zip file will automatically be downloaded to your "Downloads" folder on your Mac, unless you previously changed this default preference. By default, your Mac should automatically unzip the file, and place a folder in your downloads folder named "Tesla-iTunes-Playlist"

Once downloaded you can store and run the script from any folder on your Mac. For the sake of simplicity and the following instructions I recommend moving it to your Desktop to run. You can move the file later to anywhere on your computer.

Note: This Tesla Automator script only works on a Mac running OS X. It does NOT work on a PC running Windows :-(

2. Inside the Finder Folder named, "Tesla-iTunes-Playlist" you will find a file named, "Read Me", that contains simple installation and use instructions. You will also see an automator script file named, "Tesla iTunes Playlist" with a Martian looking dude icon as seen below.

3. Before you click on the automator file named "Tesla iTunes Playlist", go to iTunes, and select a series of tracks. They can be in your library, or in a playlist, but they MUST be downloaded on your Mac! (meaning it won't work with songs that were added to a playlist from Apple Music without purchasing them).

4. When all desired tracks are selected, run the automator script by double-clicking the Automator file named, “Tesla iTunes Playlist”.

5. The first time you run this script, a folder named "Playlist Output" will be created on your desktop. Each time you run the script, it will "look for" this folder to output the files to.

This means you can rename and move the "Playlist Output" folder when the operation is complete. In doing so, the script will automatically create a new folder on your desktop. If you don't modify name of the folder, it will continue to write to the same folder. Be careful

6. When the script has completed, all tracks will be copied into the newly created desktop folder named "Playlist Output", and will be given a numerical prefix to maintain the order of the tracks when played on your Tesla.

Note: The Secret Sauce here is that the Automator script is outputting a new set of files with updated file names that include the numerical sequence numbers, since the Tesla by default plays song files in a folder in alphabetical order.

7. To organize and play these tracks on your Tesla, move them into desired folders (per playlist) onto a USB drive. When browsing the drive, your folder titles will let you organize “Playlists”, and the tracks will maintain their playback order!!!

In other words, if you have a playlist on your Mac titled "Favorite Beach Boys Songs", You could create a new folder named "Beach Boys", and move the songs into that file from the folder named "Playlist Output." Next you would move the new folder to your USB drive, and when you plug it into the Tesla, it would show up and look like the screen-shot a the beginning of this story.

NOTE - Each time you run the script, it will output files to the same folder. This means if you run the script a second time without removing the previous files, the new set of files will be added to the folder, which becomes nearly impossible to correct without starting over from the beginning!

I hope you enjoy!!! It took a lot of time and experimenting to achieve this superb solution.

-----------------

Update July 11, 2016: I am confused about why the Tesla does not display any album artwork for songs played from the USB drive, so I went searching for and found this fascinating thread:

https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/changes-status-of-usb-music-album-play-order-shuffle.72009/

Basically, Tesla left the USB music option half-baked, and in the thread above, a Tesla Model S owner mentioned he was a programer, and that he thought Tesla should "Open Source" the USB User-Interface code so that he and others could basically finish and polish it in their spare time. I think this is a brilliant idea, and I plan to reach out to Tesla to suggest they take this course.

The issues I experience when playing music from the USB drives are:

1. No album artwork is ever displayed!?!! (as seen in the photo below). This is absurd as all my songs have the album artwork embedded in the MP3 file. Tesla should have an option where user can choose if they want album artwork to be displayed from the embedded artwork in the MP3 file or to have it come from CCDB Gracenote. [Yes, I spent zillions of hours perfecting my album artwork, since many services like CCDB Gracenote commonly put up the wrong random artwork. An example of this would be you are listening to The Beach Boys, and the UI is falsely displaying album artwork for Men At Work].

It seriously pisses-me-off that the Tesla UI is so beautiful and when I play music, it ALWAYS shows a blank generic screen for album artwork, which totally defeats the purpose of having a beautiful screen.

2. It only displays the Song Name and USB drive source (as seen in the photo above) and omits the Artist, Album or Playlist names, which I would prefer. In other words, I would prefer if it displayed the Artist Name and Song Name. I don't really need to see "USB 1, or USB 2" on every song as I already know it is playing from that source which I chose.

3. It is a known issue that if you par the car and, in effect, turn it off, music from the USB playlist will keep playing in the background. In other words, if I have playlist playing in the car when I park the car, and lets say I sm on song number 22, when I come back to the car 24 hots later, it will not pickup where it left off, but will randomly be on something like song 188 in a playlist.

4. It will seemingly randomly scan the USB drives for music, and when it does this I can't listen to music until it is done scanning. There should be a manual "Scan USB Drive" feature so this does not happen. Why does it need to randomly scan the drives?

P85D v. P90D

P85D v. P90D
Insane v. Ludicrous

According to Tesla a P85D with "Insane" mode can accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds. Conversely, a P90D with "Ludicrous" mode can achieve 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds. This video shows a P85D racing a P90D.

The P85D driver gets a very slight head start, which makes all the difference in the world, in the sense it takes the P90D more than 10 seconds to catch-up and pass it.

The obvious moral of this story is so much of driving/racing has to do with the drivers reflexes, timing and driving skills.

Porsche Competitor To Tesla
Mission E Concept

Porsche showed off a potential Tesla Model S competitor at the Frankfurt Auto Show, named the Mission E Concept. This all-electric powertrain potential Tesla competitor has dual motors, and more than 600 horsepower. It also incorporates the first 800 Volt drive system that can charge the car up to 80% (250 Mile Range) in only 15 minutes. It can scoot from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.

This engineering masterpiece features both, all-wheel-drive and all-wheel-steering. Its carbon-fiber body is coupled with reinforced polymer, and aluminum to make it light and strong. It can also be charged by placing the car over a special conductive ground tile.

I have been wondering, since Elon Musk open-sourced the patents, how long it would take a major automaker to try and build a better Tesla, and this might be it!

New Aluminum Battery Technology Could Give Tesla Model S 500 Mile Range

Stanford University
New Aluminum Battery Technology
Could Give Tesla Model S 500 Mile Range
+
Fully Charge Batteries In 5 Minutes

Stanford University has developed an Aluminum/Carbon battery technology that essentially doubles the capacity of standard lithium-ion batteries in the same space, while allowing a Model S to be fully charged in less than 5 minutes!!!!!

What does this mean for Tesla and the automotive world? First and foremost, range anxiety would become a thing of the past by offering 500 miles between charges, and it also means a Supercharger could charge up a Model S in less than 5 minutes. So basically, gas stations could also offer electricity, with the exception that instead of costing $70 to fill a car tank, it would cost around $5!!!

Also, these aluminum batteries can be charged up to 7,500 times without any loss in capacity, which is 750% longer than a lithium-ion battery!

This technology is still in its nascent stages, but shows great promise, and is probably the technology that will force the auto industry to move much more quickly to electric. Also, the Tesla Gigafactory could likely convert from manufacturing lithium batteries to aluminum/carbon batteries.

Also, imagine what this could do for laptops!?! I would give a laptop 24 hours of charge time, and could be charged to full in 5 minutes!!!! I could also give an iPhone a 3-4 day charge!!!

Forbes wrote an article about this technology which you can check out to learn more.

What it would take to build a true Tesla competitor?

What it would take to build a true Tesla competitor?

Autoblog just posted a fascinating article titled "What it would take to build a true Tesla competitor?" This is a question I keep asking myself. In other words, I believe that in order for anybody to compete successfully in electric cars they need to use the skateboard system that Tesla patented, and later open-sourced.

The obvious challenge is that a company like Mercedes is probably highly conflicted about how to best more forward on making electric vehicles.

The design challenge is that, as I just mentioned, in order to make a car with the greatest space utilization they have to incorporate Tesla's battery skateboard design. If they do this, it makes it difficult if not impossible also create ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) cars on the same platform.

Domenick Yoney wrote:

"The Tesla formula is really simple. Take the cheapest and most energy-dense lithium battery cells available, build a thin, rectangular pack and place it in the floor of the passenger cabin. To get around the low-power output ability of these individual cells, use a lot of them. Then, stick the electric motor, inverter, and gear reduction unit between the rear wheels. Immediately, this creates a vehicle with the lowest possible center of gravity and maximum amount of rotational inertia – the two most important fundamental elements for creating a great-handling car."

The photo below shows a Tesla 18650 lithium Ion battery, which was made by Panasonic. Each Model S contains approximately 7,000 of these "laptop" batteries.

In order to illustrate my point, let me offer this example. One of my favorite cars I would love to own would be the current Mercedes SL550. The challenge is that I will NEVER buy another ICE car. In other words, I will only ever buy another car if it is electric/ Why? Because there are a zillion advantages Electric has over Internal Combustion. I took the photo below in February of 2015, in front of the Palace Of Fine Arts in San Francisco. It shows off the stunning lines of the Mercedes SL silhouette.

Imagine if this Mercedes has the Tesla battery skateboard chassis, it would free up a tremendous amount of space in the front for huge frunk (front-trunk).

Recently I observed a current model Mercedes SL that a couple was traveling in as they were on vacation, and had their suitcases stuffed behind the rear seats. The car was parked, and the suitcase were really crammed behind the two front seats. This is because if you put the top down, there is not enough room in the trunk for the luggage. If Mercedes-Benz made an SL with the skateboard battery pack design, like the one found in the Tesla Model S, it would free up the entire front trunk for luggage, which would make perfect sense.

The challenge is that Mercedes would not be able to dual purpose such a chassis to also produce an ICE version, and therein lies the challenge.

The solution to this challenge may be found today in the BMW i3 electric car, which is the only vehicle that uses the Tesla inspired "Skateboard" design.

The image below shows the "skateboard" battery platform on the BMW i3, which is remarkably similar to the Tesla Skateboard design. There are so many benefits to this design, I don't see how any other automobile manufacture could match or exceed the design with something different.

The clue here is it appears BMW decided to develop their electric vehicle division completely isolated from their standard ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles. It's almost like BMW's electric vehicle division is a different company altogether, and perhaps that is what all other brands will have to do in order to compete with Tesla in the future.

It is going to be really interesting to see how the entire auto industry evolves of the next quarter-century, as it seem inevitable to me that in the future all cars will be electric. Until then, the Tesla Model S remains the king of cars.
