Tesla Model YL: My Initial Impressions

Tesla Model YL

My Initial Impressions

When I first saw the Model YL released in China, I thought it was interesting, but I dismissed it. Then, a few days ago, I was one of the first people in the U.S. to test drive a Model YL, and I was STUNNED!!!!!

I think the Model YL is a great Model X replacement in many ways. Ironically, the Model YL is 3 inches shorter and 3 inches narrower than the Model Y, but it's approximately the same height, yet the wheelbase on the YL is 7 inches longer. Speaking of the Model X, people either love or hate the falcon wings door. I happen to hate them as they have driven me crazy for years, so I am really happy to see the Model YL has regular rear side doors.

Model YL Interior

I was really, really impressed with how the Model YL drove, and with it's 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, accelerates almost as quickly as a CyberTruck, not to mention it has roughly the same range at 332 miles. When I drove in FSD mode, it was superb, and my understanding is that it drives identically to a standard Model Y. Speaking of which, the FSD is noticeably better on the YL than it is on the CyberTruck, as it seems more confident and dialed in.

The interior of the Model YL blew my mind with the left of detail and refinement. To begin with, it looks fantastic, and to my way of thinking it looks like the cockpit of a super futuristic sports car. The seats were the most comfortable Tesla seats that I have ever sat in, and it features adjustable headrests that can be adjusted up and down manually. Also, the seats, including the headrests were softer and more luxurious than any other Tesla seat I have ever sat in.

The second row seats, which are in the middle of the vehicle, were surprisingly comfortable and also have the soft cushioned adjustable headrests. The two captains chairs also have a new feature seen below where armrests pop up, which the Model X never had. Most importantly these seats can move back pretty far, and can also recline far more than they ever did in the Model X.

I was shocked with how much room there was with the third row seats, which feature cupholders, USB-C chargers, and vents. I wouldn't want to sit in the third row on a long road trip, but I think they could work really well for seating children.

I took the photo below of the Model YL in a Tesla showroom, and it really looks like a Model X, and a Model S had a baby.

The Model YL has the best sound system I have ever heard in a Tesla, and it blows away the sound quality in the CyberTruck. Also, the YL has the best build quality of any Tesla I have EVER driven. As a designer, I can tell that Franz and his team, really dialed in every detail in the YL.

The rear spoiler on the Model YL is so efficient and aerodynamic, it increases range by 15 miles, and it looks pretty rad...

Just like the CyberTruck, the Model YL supports bi directional charging, although neither one can currently work with a Tesla Powerwall battery, which is terribly unfortunate, but hopefully they will figure it out sometime soon.

Below are several Tesla Model YL reviews that are excellent.
